A brief introduction to the nine worlds in Norse mythology, scattered among the branches of the world tree.
The Aesir are not the only deities present in Norse mythology, and Vanaheim is home to a much older branch of gods - the Vanir. In Old Norse, it was called Vanaheimr meaning "Homeland of the Vanir." These deities, unlike the Aesir, were known for their mastery of sorcery, prophecy, and magic.
The Vanir are also known for being a more "natural" set of gods and goddesses. They tend to be associated with fertility and natural occurrences, while the Aesir are more known for both their civilized and violent aspects, such as war and justice. There is significant overlap between the groups, however, as three Vanir made their home on Asgard after a long conflict between their people. These deities - Njord, Freya, and Freyr - are integral figures in Norse beliefs.
Another connection between Vanaheim and Asgard is that here lies the other home for the worthy dead - Fólkvangr. This is where the other half of slain warriors go to await Ragnarok. These are sometimes thought of as the better half, as Freya actually picks her chosen before Odin can choose his for Valhalla.
