The Nine Realms

A brief introduction to the nine worlds in Norse mythology, scattered among the branches of the world tree.

Introduction

The nine worlds are an important aspect of Norse mythology, as they are the stage all myths play out upon. Also called the nine realms, they were known in Old Norse as the Níu Heimar. Heimar meaning home, abode, or - in a larger sense - region, land, or world. While a complete list of the nine does not exist in any surviving texts, their existence has been pieced together from various sources, such as the Icelandic sagas.
